Viscaria’s water treatment plant to be inaugurated on 22 October
Gruvaktiebolaget Viscaria announces today that the water treatment plant at the Viscaria mine will be inaugurated on 22 October 2025. The facility is a central part of Viscaria’s strategy for sustainable mining and marks an important milestone ahead of the mine’s reopening.
“Inaugurating the water treatment plant on schedule is a testament to our focus and ability to deliver on our goals. Through this facility, we ensure that our operations meet strict environmental standards and contribute to long-term sustainable development in the region. Once production reaches full capacity, Viscaria is expected to supply approximately five percent of Europe’s copper demand, while the project is anticipated to have one of the world’s lowest carbon footprints. It will play a key role in strengthening Europe’s self-sufficiency in critical raw materials,” said Jörgen Olsson, CEO of Viscaria.
With a full-scale capacity of 1,000 m³ per hour, the facility not only boosts performance but also sets a new, superior standard that exceeds both Swedish and international environmental requirements. It is the first of its kind in the mining industry to combine sand filtration and ion exchange technology on a large scale.
“The water treatment plant is a key investment in both the environment and the future of our operations. The inauguration offers a unique opportunity to experience the facility on site and see how we combine leading environmental technology with regional growth and responsible mining – all to strengthen Europe’s future supply of raw materials,” said Peter Wihlborg, Head of Environment and Sustainability at Viscaria.
