Crunchfish receives U.S. Notice of Allowance for patent preventing fraudulent cloning of trusted applications

REG

The U.S. patent application, US 18/843,418, is titled “Preventing fraudulent use by cloning of a trusted application.” The USPTO has concluded its examination on the merits and allowed the application for issuance as a patent.

The invention introduces a security mechanism where a trusted application starts in a locked mode, preventing access to protected functionality and data. The application is unlocked only after a successful verification handshake with a backend resource, verifying the execution state of the trusted application and preventing fraudulent use of cloned instances. The USPTO specifically identifies prevention of double-spending using cloned digital wallets as an example of the fraud addressed by the invention.

The allowed U.S. claims cover both method and system implementations. The approved implementation uses a counter-based handshake in two stages, with the trusted application and backend verifying execution state before the application can be unlocked. The same implementation is covered by the granted Swedish patent.

With the U.S. Notice of Allowance, Crunchfish has now secured positive patent decisions for this invention in Sweden, Europe and the United States, further strengthening the company’s international intellectual property portfolio within secure client-side processing and governed digital applications.

“Receiving the Notice of Allowance in the United States is an important milestone for this invention. Together with our Swedish patent and the European decision to grant, it gives us strong protection in three important markets. Preventing cloning and double-spending is particularly relevant for secure digital wallets and offline payments, where trusted applications must be able to protect digital value even when operating on user-controlled devices, says Joachim Samuelsson, CEO of Crunchfish AB.

About Crunchfish – crunchfish.com

Crunchfish is a deep fintech company developing governed offline payments technology for payment systems, banks, and payment applications. The company enables offline payments as a Layer-2 solution on top of existing payment systems, allowing transactions to be executed without connectivity while ledger authority and settlement remain unchanged. Through a reservation-based model, resilience is achieved without creating parallel forms of money or unmanaged credit risk. Crunchfish’s architecture is patented and enables interoperability across multiple payment systems and markets. The solution strengthens system stability while also supporting economic incentives by ensuring that liquidity backing offline payments remains within the regulated financial system.
