Peab builds new greenhouse in the Gothenburg Botanical Garden

The Gothenburg Botanical Garden is one of West Sweden's largest attractions with close to 600,000 visitors annually. The existing greenhouse was opened in the beginning of the 80s and now needs to be updated to meet current and future demands. Peab has therefore been commissioned to build a new greenhouse divided into sections with different climate zones and a new visitors' center. Half of the new greenhouse will be open to the public while the other half will contain plant collections. The entire construction will be 6,600 m2, of which the greenhouse will be 2,800 m2. Also included in the project is demolition of the existing greenhouse and outdoor landscaping.

"We're very honored to have been entrusted with participating in expanding the Botanical Garden's vital work. Building a greenhouse and visitors' center of this size in a valuable cultural historic environment is complex and requires a great deal of us as contractors. We're proud to contribute with our expertise," says Liselott Bergkvist, Region Manager Peab.

The new buildings have stringent sustainability standards and will be built for the most part with circular material flows and reuse. Advanced greenhouse technology will be installed in order to maintain the right climate year round in the greenhouses, including a climate computer that runs the heating system, lighting, ventilation, shades and humidification. Everything will also be constructed to achieve the most efficient use of energy and water in the buildings.

"It's amazing to think that the same year the Gothenburg Botanical Garden turns 100 we're in the process of creating something that will bring joy to the residents of the Västra Götaland Region and visitors from near and far for a long time to come. We're building a new chapter in Gothenburg's history now, and I'm proud to be part of it," says Ior Berglund, Head of Management at Property, support and service, Västra Götaland Region's property management.

"This will give the Botanical Garden's unique scientific plant collections from all over the world the right conditions for their preservation and to conduct research. Never has this been more crucial now that biodiversity is so strained. Providing the Botanical Garden with a proper visitors' center is an important part of our work to spread knowledge and inform about the diversity of plant life," says Hanna Tornevall, Head of Management at the Gothenburg Botanical Garden.

The project is a turnkey contract. Construction will start in the autumn of 2023 and the project is expected to be entirely completed during the spring of 2028.

The project will be order registered in the third quarter 2023.
