Lindab launches low-carbon emissions steel products in Sweden
Steel is an essential material in the construction sector with unique properties that allow it to be recycled repeatedly without losing quality. However, the manufacturing process for new steel generates large amounts of carbon dioxide. Lindab is working to minimise the company's carbon footprint and will be one of the world’s first companies to access fossil-free steel in a few years. But Lindab is already today taking the first step with the launch of low-carbon emissions building products.
"By developing products in low-carbon emissions steel, we enable our customers to create sustainable buildings from both an environmental and quality perspective. We are eagerly awaiting our first delivery of fossil-free steel, but we want to make a difference already now and offer this solution to the market as soon as possible," says Anders Johansson, Managing Director of Lindab Profil, the subsidiary within Lindab that develops building products.
The low-carbon emissions steel, XCarb® RRP, has about 70 percent lower CO2 footprint than traditionally produced steel, according to environmental product declarations by manufacturer ArcelorMittal. The steel is based on at least 75% recycled steel and is produced using 100% renewable energy. The steel is coated with Magestic, Lindab's trademark for zinc magnesium, an effective corrosion inhibitor.
Roof and facade products
Initially, Lindab will offer roof and facade products in its sinus profile in low-carbon emissions steel. During the year, the range will be expanded to more product areas.
"The production of steel has a major impact on our climate and we are committed to reducing our environmental impact and that of our customers. This is one of many steps we will take on the journey towards a better climate," concludes Anders Johansson.
The first orders will be ready to be received as early as the beginning of the second quarter of 2023.
